Since the early 1980s, Professor Li has dedicated himself to primate ecology, behavior, evolution, conservation, and environmental protection in China, focusing in particular on rare and endangered monkeys. His work has led to the publication of over 100 journal articles, establishing him as a renowned primatologist and conservationist both domestically and globally. Among his prominent project, he's particularly interested in understanding how the Qinling golden snub-nosed monkeys adapt to and tolerate the habitat fragmentation and cold winter, and how they form a large group in the forest different from other species in Colobinae.  Currently, in addition to be a Professor at the College of Life Sciences, Northwest University, he holds the position of President of the China Primatological Society and serves as the Vice-President of the Chinese Society of Zoology. In 2024, he got Well Deserved Award of Chimelong from the 4th China Zoological Society.
