After a degree in biochemistry, he joined the Institut Pasteur in the service of Professor Macheboeuf, then, on the latter's death, that of Jacques Monod. He was appointed research director in 1963. In 1968 he was a professor at Jussieu then at the College de France. Elected to the Academy of Sciences, he was permanent secretary.
